Tips From the Groomers....
It may seem practical to shave your dog in the summertime, but you may be doing more harm
than good, depending on your dog's coat type. Breeds that are usually trimmed, such as
poodles, bichons, and portugese water dogs, have hair that grows very quickly, so shaving them
has little effect. Other breeds, however, such as golden retrievers, german shepherds, huskies
and newfoundlands need their coat to protect them from the sun. If their coats are shaved, they
grow back slowly, in patches, or sometimes not at all. Clipping their hair can permanently
damage the coat. Dogs have the ability to raise and lower their hair shafts according to the
temperature around them. If you feel your dog is really uncomfortable in the heat, a thorough
grooming will help remove the winter undercoat. Maybe even think about a small room air
conditioner. You can buy one for about the same price as it costs to shave the dog.
